i feel like ths is the video that so many of us need to hear. i remember starting design feeling so excited to work with clients and having my soul crushed by constant revisions, low pay, and uneducated opinions on "what looks good." quickly i realized that taking on multiple of these projects at once to support myself was not very fun at all and lacked the experimentation, intuition, and collaboration that i do enjoy. i've become much more selective with clients now and enjoy working contracted for larger companies + extended time periods where i can put my skills into a larger collective project and keep my artistic and nuianced side of design to myself to enjoy. i never liked doing logos, i'm not good at illustrating, and i'm still a very successful designer in many regards; even if i thought that's what you had to be to make it in this industry. good for you paola for not ignoring your true passion and making it work! there really is space for EVERYONE.

Im shocked to hear someone else say they don't want to do client work. I quickly realized it wasn't for me. I love brand design, I love designing as a whole but client work specifically I just don't necessarily enjoy.

Wow. I wish I could just not take clients and not have a full-time design job and still be able to live and pay my bills. I wish I could just dedicate all my time to my personal website and portfolio and ideas. This is not a realistic image of what being a graphic designer is if you have to support yourself in the real world. Most designers I know irl work a full-time design job Mon-Fri and do freelance on their off time just to make ends meet. Also design, by definition, is not about your own ideas or feelings. It's about purposeful and effective visual communication to an audience. Usually on behalf of someone else. Zero percent of my design job is about doing what I want.

omg stop, I have been considering pivoting from client work for so long and this just feels like a sign (me choosing to see the littlest of things as signs 😂), I don’t find joy in it as I used to and I think that’s part of getting more experience tbh. I just don’t want to design for other people anymore, or have to limit myself in my creations. There are a lot of ways we can have a career as brand and web designers that don’t include 1:1 or the final consumer and that’s what I’ll start focusing on this quarter. As always, crazy how much I relate to you and your content! edit: lol and now youre talking about taking things as signs, IS THAT ANOTHER SIGN HAHAHA

I'm a novice graphic designer, and right now, I'm trying to figure out the path towards a stable, long-term career. It's been really overwhelming because of just how much there is to do, and sometimes I can't help but worry about what space there may or may not be in the community for me because there are so many good designers with way more experience I have out there, but your channel keeps me inspired and reminds me of what I want for myself.

I have a question to you ma'am I design visiting cards for clients. Should i include my visiting cards work in portfolio? Coz my friend who is a graphic designer and other graphic designers tell me never to include my visiting card design works. I do not know who to believe different videos tell different advices i don't know which one to believe is authentic creating portfolio advice. And i have not studied Adobe illustrator graphic design from school or university I just purchased the book and completely learnt from the book and became a Graphic designer. I can show you my design works.
